I don’t read books anymore, I just look at their covers. Seriously though, if there’s a book you want me to take notice of, design a cover with lashings of yellow on it. The Shut Ins by Katherine Brabon, is one example, or We Want What We Want (published by Penguin Random House, 2021), the new title by Vancouver based Canadian author Alix Ohlin.
We Want What We Want is a collection of short stories, some with premises as eye-catching as the book’s vibrant cover. Take Money, Geography, Youth, which sees a young woman return home after a year of volunteer work in Africa, to find her father is about to marry her childhood friend. How’s that for electrifying? Or maybe I should take an interest in another colour?
